Many coastal habitats, especially saltmarsh, are often looked upon as 'wasteland' and are often bulldozed to make way for industrial developments or, more recently, housing estates. One of the reasons that this species is endangered is the loss of habitat on mainland Australia, especially areas of coastal saltmarsh, where it spends winter. Since Birds Australia began monitoring the wintering population of Orange-bellied Parrots in south-eastern Australia since the mid-1980s we have realised how important saltmarsh is to a whole range of different species.
