Discovery Centre

The role of the Birds Australia Discovery Centre is to connect Australians with their birds through the provision of a variety of educational and outreach programs.. The Discovery Centre will engage the Australian community and tell them about the value of birds, the threats they face, and the part every Australian can play to ensure them a bright future.

The Discovery Centre will be a focal point for residents and visitors alike to learn about Australian birds and their habitats; for school groups to study birds and biodiversity conservation; for researchers wanting access to specialist avian literature in the Centre's library; and for overseas bird enthusiasts coming to Australia through Sydney to use as a starting point to their explorations.

Location

Located in the Newington Armory- formerly the Royal Australian Navy Armaments Depot in the Parklands at Sydney Olympic Park, the Discovery Centre involved the adaptive reuse of 4 heritage buildings over 250m2 for the purposes of administration, library and interpretation facilities. Adjoining the Newington Nature Reserve - which is of significant environmental value including bird habitats - the facility will provide an additional area of interest for the increasing number of visitors to this part of the Parklands. Importantly it further reinforces the partnership between the Sydney Olympic Park Authority (SOPA) and BA in engaging the community, and communicating a series of key messages related to biodiversity and the value of birds and their habitats.

Activities at the Centre

  • Bird education events (workshops, bird walks, seminars, visits by school groups),
  • Provision of expertise on birds to SOPA whenever the Newington Armory is open to the general public,
  • Research and conservation projects, including Birds in Backyards, a joint project with the Australian Museum; the Cowra Woodland Birds Program, now in its seventh year; the Regent Honeyeater Recovery Project; the North Head Bird Survey; Engaging Ethnic Communities in Urban Bird Conservation; the Port Botany Extension Project; and Bird Surveys of the Botany Wetlands, funded by Sydney Water
